Chatting to the amazing owner of The Ridge House Kristy Plumridge – it was great to hear about her incredible business. It is beautiful to share it here with you.
Some mornings at The Ridge House stay with me. Mia’s was one of them.
She arrived with five bridesmaids, her mum and dad, a hair stylist and a makeup artist, and by mid-morning the whole house was humming. Hair and makeup happened in the natural light pouring through the windows. Dresses hung from door frames. Music drifted from room to room. And at 10am, right on schedule, espresso martinis appeared.
‘Getting ready with all my gal-pals. This was so special, so calm, chill and exciting. I will never forget getting our hair and makeup done, taking ‘getting ready’ photos, having espresso martinis at 10am and the best hype-up before we headed off to the venue.’ – Mia
But when I think about their wedding, I don’t think about the ceremony.
I think about the morning and the beautiful opportunities that come with being part of your Gippsland wedding preparation -those precious hours before the ceremony when the excitement builds, the champagne is poured, and the people you love gather around you.
The six hours nobody plans for.
Couples spend months choosing a venue, tasting menus, meeting celebrants, ordering flowers and working out where everyone will sit for dinner.
The six hours beforehand somehow become an afterthought.
Yet those hours hold some of the memories people treasure most.
Parents seeing their daughter in her dress for the first time. Friends laughing while someone struggles with a button that refuses to cooperate. The quiet moment before everyone piles into the cars. The deep breath before the day begins.
If you’ve ever been in a bridal party, you’ve probably experienced the alternative.
Six women, two makeup artists, a photographer and a garment steamer squeezed into a hotel room. Makeup spread across every surface. Someone sitting on the bathroom floor because there’s nowhere else to plug in a hairdryer. The photographer hunting for one clean wall and one patch of decent light.
The morning deserves better than that.
It’s one of the reasons so many couples first enquire about The Ridge House as a wedding preparation stay. They already have their ceremony venue. What they’re searching for is somewhere the day can begin well. Enough space for everyone to relax, and light good enough that the photographs almost take care of themselves.
Gippsland wedding preparation and accommodation done differently.
That’s exactly how most wedding mornings unfold here.
The Ridge House has four bedrooms, which means people naturally spread out instead of living on top of one another. Hair and makeup gathers around the kitchen table beneath the wall of windows overlooking the valley. Parents can quietly make another cup of tea.
Bridesmaids disappear into another room to get dressed. The photographer moves between conversations without asking people to shuffle sideways every five minutes.
Nothing feels rushed.
Breakfast is already waiting when everyone wakes. Gippsland Jersey milk and butter, local sourdough, homemade jam, fresh eggs and honey from our hives at Green Hills Farm next door mean one less thing to organise before the biggest day of your life.
Some bridal parties ask me to prepare a Gippsland cheese board for later in the morning. Others prefer a fresh fruit platter with local cheese and nuts. Those little decisions are easy to take care of when everything is happening under one roof.
And if the nerves begin to creep in, the Tramway Track is only a short walk away. Wandering beneath tall ash gums and fern gullies settles a busy mind. It just does. Ten quiet minutes in the bush can do a lot of good.
What your photographer notices.
Before Mia’s wedding I asked photographer Kristy from Kinship by Kristy what she loved about photographing at The Ridge House.
Her answer wasn’t really about the house.
It was about what the house allows to happen.

I hear similar comments from photographers time and again.
Nobody is rushing from one location to another. The light changes naturally throughout the morning. There are photographs in the kitchen, on the veranda beneath the ornamental grape, in the garden, and later at Loggers Lookout overlooking the valley towards Mount Baw Baw.
The photographs feel relaxed because the people are relaxed.
And that’s something no stylist can create.
More than wedding preparations.
Most couples book The Ridge House for the morning of their wedding.
Some choose to stay on and celebrate with an intimate micro wedding or elopement surrounded by bushland.
That’s a story for another day.
This story belongs to the beginning.
The anticipation.
The laughter.
The hugs before everyone leaves.
The feeling that, just for a little while, time slows down.

Wedding mornings always finish the same way.
The music stops.
The photographers leave.
The last car disappears down the driveway.
A little later I walk back through the house before preparing it for the next guests.
It’s always quiet.
A coffee cup on the table.
A ribbon forgotten on a chair.
Sunlight still spilling across the kitchen floor.
Those little things don’t matter.
What matters is knowing that, for a few hours, this old farmhouse became part of somebody’s family story.
